The UK is replacing the ageing Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) with modern digital communications. Businesses still using analogue phone lines or devices connected via copper networks will need to move to digital alternatives before the national switch-off.
Key Dates
- September 2023 – New analogue phone line orders stopped
- December 2025 – Existing WLR and analogue contracts begin closing
- 31 January 2027 – Nationwide PSTN switch-off
Existing services can continue for now, but all organisations must migrate before the final deadline.
What Could Be Affected?
The change impacts more than office landlines. Any system using a copper phone line may need upgrading.
Common examples include:
- Alarm and security systems
- Lift emergency phones
- CCTV and monitoring equipment
- Card payment machines
- Door entry and building management systems
Why You Should Act Early
Delaying migration can lead to:
- Higher costs as legacy line prices increase
- Installation delays as demand rises closer to the deadline
- Service disruption if systems are not upgraded before 2027
Planning helps ensure a smooth transition.
